| Nimbin's Hemp Festival has culminated in a colourful spectacle of the sort our town is famous for. A crowd of a few thousand people lined the roadsides for a parade led by the Ganja Faeries through the main street. Hundreds took part in the parade calling for an end to the Howard Government's punitive approach to Cannabis prohibition. The Hemp festival and its annual parade and rally call for the legalisation of the plant.
Protesters carried the 'Big Joint' through Cullen and Sibley Streets to Peace Park for the Hemp Festival's Drug Law Reform Rally, taking place as this story is published.
Police Sieze Pot, Pills at Fesitval.
Police say 400 grams of Cannabis, more than 150 Cannabis Cookies and small amounts of amphtamine/MDMA tables have been siezed and 15 people arrested on the first day of the Mardi grass festival.
Ten people were charged, ranging from possessing prohibited drugs, warrants and an unlicensed driver. Police say they've had to step up their presence at this and last year's Mardi Grass due to increasing violence and drugs such as amphetamines and methamphetamines
in recent years. 93 people were arrested for drug related offences at last year's festival.
